Client Insight

A classicsl, busy college student.

He took most of his meal in campus food court, with a budget of 100NTD. Since his dorm is just a few steps away, he hates carrying a backpack just for a quick bite.

When receiving change, he stuffs it into his pocket without a second thought. His current wallet lacks a dedicated coin compartment, and he finds traditional coin pouches frustrating:

They are noisy, the zippers are tedious to use, and it takes far too long to fumble for the exact amount he needs.

The inpiration

It’s not new, I just made it better.

I started this project with deep research, only to find similar solutions already in the market. Honestly, I was ready to give up and just buy the damn thing.

But then it hit me: there isn’t a version designed for NTD. And even if there were, the standard designs simply wouldn’t work for our currency.

Here’s why:

Currency Value

JPY has a lower unit value.

To buy the same item, Japanese users carry 5x more coins. Resulting to those bulky designs.

Thickness

JPY and NTD has different thickness (obviously) .

To adapt these differences I’ll have to rethink about the frame size and how coins affect them.

variety

Unlike JPY has 6 kinds of coin, we got 4.

Once again this allowed me to shrink the design into something lighter, easier to access.

Research I

Measuring the thickness

This part detemines how thick my design’s gonna be. I don’t want to make it complicated, so I measured them and tried to find a number that works for every coin.

Research II

To determine the ideal capacity, I tracked my daily coin accumulation. At the end of every day, I logged the exact quantity of each coin denomination of which I possess.

For the first conclusion, $1$ and $10$ NTD coins make up the vast majority of daily pocket change. I attribute this to what I call the 'Next Rank Effect.' Because it takes five $1 coins to reach the next denomination ($5 NTD), but only two $5$ coins to reach $10 NTD, the accumulation rate is fundamentally uneven. The same applies to $10s and $50s .

My another finding is that I never had more then four $50 on me, because then I would just spend the changes.

How many coin do people usually bring ?

Features & analyzes

Little bits that made it good

More than enough capacity

The design stores 5 coin per slot, which adds up to 390 NTD at max.

Really easy to count

Grab five 1$ NTD coins in one go, making small payments easy.

The refined size fits into any pocket
β€” even slim-fit jeans

It Fits

Simple design

Easy to manufacture

Coindex was designed with cost in mind.

Constructed with one material only. No glues, no screws, just fine flexible PLA plastic. It costs me around $12 NTD to make, could be significantly lower if made by factory.
